With the introduction of electric mobility, the charging card came onto the market - for authentication at the charging stations and for billing the charging current drawn. In addition to purely electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles also require charging current. While electric cars are powered exclusively by electricity, plug-in hybrid vehicles are equipped with both an electric motor and a conventional combustion engine. Drivers of hybrid vehicles therefore need both a fuel card to obtain fossil fuels and a charging card to fill up with electricity. The development of hybrid cards that allow both refuelling and charging was therefore not long in coming. The Westfalen Service Card became the Westfalen Service Card + eCharge.
Today, various smartphone apps make digital payment easier. To do this, the fuel card simply has to be stored in an app as a means of payment. In this case, it is called a digital fuel card. Today, however, it would be more appropriate to call it a multifunction card, as the Westfalen Service Card + eCharge enables the use of various online services.
