More climate protection - that is the great task of our time. In order to comply with the Paris Climate Agreement, the EU wants to become climate neutral by 2050. Germany wants to achieve this goal by 2045. Greenhouse gas emissions are to be significantly reduced already by 2030 - this is legally binding in the European and German Climate Protection Act. For the industry, mobility and buildings/energy sectors, this means that CO2e emissions must be reduced by more than 40 % by 2030 - a huge challenge!
The energy transition is possible with hydrogen (H2) - the energy carrier of the future. It reacts cleanly to form water and is thus an alternative to fossil fuels. The focus here is on "green" hydrogen. Green hydrogen is produced by electrolysis - using renewable energies. Players worldwide are currently working intensively on the development of capacities for hydrogen production for green hydrogen and solutions for its supply. At Westfalen, we too are currently developing sources of green hydrogen and also supplying companies with grey hydrogen.

Hydrogen is not new to the Westfalen Group. We have been supplying our customers with (grey) hydrogen in various quality standards for around 40 years - whether via cylinders, bundles, trailers or on-site production facilities. We also bring decades of experience to bear in shaping the mobility revolution: Alternative fuels have been part of the portfolio of our filling stations since the mid-1980s. With our liquefied gas brand Westfalengas, we have been taking care of our customers' energy supply for almost 70 years. Westfalen is therefore strongly positioned to accompany and support you on the path to the energy transition - whether in the field of industry, mobility or heat supply.
The challenges of the energy turnaround and climate targets can only be met by joining forces. Westfalen therefore supports various hydrogen and fuel cell initiatives. For example, we are a member of the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), of the Deutschen Wasserstoff- und Brennstoffzellen-Verbands (DWV) and the Future Gas Initiative.
Thanks to our own production and filling sites, reliable sources and a strong logistics fleet, we supply our hydrogen customers with a high level of supply security. We work with you to develop the best supply solution to meet your needs. The easiest way for existing customers to order hydrogen in cylinders is via our Onlineshop – here you will also find product and safety data sheets for all product variants.
Vehicles powered by fuel cells impress with their long ranges and short refuelling times. For the fuel cell to function optimally, the purity grade of the refuelled hydrogen must be suitable. Our product for fuel cells complies with the DIN EN 17124 standard with a purity level of 99.97 %. It is regularly analysed for secondary components and thus ensures the highest level of safety.
To meet the requirements of laboratories and science, we also offer hydrogen with purity levels up to 99.9999 percent by volume. Our range includes Alumini® small containers, but also Specidur® hydrogen helium (H2/He) especially for the determination of engine emissions.
Green hydrogen is essential for achieving climate protection goals. It is produced by electrolysis with the help of electricity from renewable energies. The production capacities for green hydrogen are currently being built up worldwide. Standards for green hydrogen are also currently being (further) developed.
Are you planning a new hydrogen project? Our experts will be happy to advise and support you! Together with you, we will develop the best solution for your needs, from the required hydrogen quality to a sensible hydrogen infrastructure and the establishment of H2 production capacities for the on-site generation of hydrogen.
Whether fuel cell or combustion engine - the mobility revolution can only succeed with hydrogen. Its advantages are particularly noticeable in heavy trucks and on long-distance journeys. But forklifts, buses, construction and agricultural machinery are also convincing with H2 propulsion. The filling station infrastructure is still a challenge - but Westfalen offers solutions.
Robust, flexible, cost-effective: our mobile hydrogen filling station, developed in cooperation with NanoSun, is the ideal solution for all those who want to enter hydrogen mobility with small starter fleets - whether trucks, buses or excavators. The container-based system can be set up almost anywhere, for purchase or for rent.
Customers have been finding alternative fuels at our filling stations for 40 years. In 2016, we opened our first hydrogen filling station in Münster-Amelsbüren - one of the first in NRW. Cars, buses and trucks are refuelled here at 350 or 700 bar. We are also working on the further expansion of the H2 filling station network, especially in Lower Saxony and NRW.
