LNG in heavy-duty transport: What advantages does the alternative fuel offer?

Compared to diesel, LNG is a sustainable alternative for heavy goods transport: CO2 emissions are significantly reduced for the same performance. What other advantages can you benefit from?

Road freight transport is humming more than ever. Yet most of the vehicles on Germany's roads are still diesel commercial vehicles, which are responsible for a total of 30 % of all traffic emissions and just under 6 % of Germany's total CO2 emissions.

This is set to change for the benefit of climate protection: Commercial vehicles that run on LNG fuel cause significantly lower CO2 emissions, while they are comparable to conventional diesel engines in terms of performance.

What advantages does LNG offer in heavy goods transport?

Improve climate footprint.

LNG burns cleaner than diesel and emits up to 20% less CO2 and 85% less nitrogen oxides. If bio-LNG is used, almost 100% of CO2 emissions can be saved compared to diesel. That is why we are converting all our locations to bio-LNG by the end of the year.

Save costs.

The prices of LNG are usually cheaper and do not fluctuate as much as those of conventional fuels. If you use bio-LNG, the price is even independent of the global gas price index. In addition, there are tax subsidies due to the significantly reduced CO2 emissions and toll exemption for LNG propulsion. When purchasing a truck with LNG propulsion, you have to expect higher investment costs. Compared to the diesel-powered counterpart, however, they should pay for themselves quickly.

Remain competitive.

Not only the state, but also your customers are placing ever higher demands on your own sustainability. If you equip your commercial vehicles with an LNG drive, you can better meet these demands and still transport goods late at night because of the reduced noise emissions. And: If you use the cryogenic liquefied natural gas, compressed by a factor of 600, as fuel, you benefit from a high energy density and thus a long range.

Benefits of LNG fuel at a glance:

Low-emission and energy-efficient drive.

Suitable for road haulage and long-distance transport.

No toll charges until the end of 2023.

Pay less energy tax.

Lower engine noise.

More environmentally friendly compared to diesel.

Use efficient LNG trucks in your ownfleet.

With the advantages mentioned, it is clear that more and morelogistics companies and freight forwarders are converting their fleets and fleets  to LNG trucks. The efficient fuel is an ecologically and economically sensible alternative to diesel. All the more so when there are potential restrictions due to driving bans or financial disadvantages teile due to an increasing toll or higher diesel taxes. Yet the technology is far advanced: Well-knownmanufacturers such as Scania, Iveco or Volvo offer LNG-powered trucks ex works.

Bio-LNG for even more environmentally friendly logistics.

An increased focus on bio-LNG is necessary to enable even more environmentally friendly logistics. That is why we will be converting all Westfalen LNG filling stations to bio-LNG in the course of the year.

Bio-LNG is produced from organic waste products. This means that emissions are almost CO2-neutral throughout the entire value chain.

LNG filling stations: Further expansion is the key.

With a well-developed LNG filling station network, it will be possible to plan routes with LNG trucks right across Germany and strengthen long-distance transport in the long term. And the more widespread the infrastructure is available, the more likely it is that more logistics companies and freight forwarders will decide to convert their fleets to LNG fuel.

We support this and plan our  LNG refuelling stations exactly where there is a need: as of today, you can conveniently refuel with LNG at the Westfalen locations in Münster, Herford, Herne and Cologne. We would like to develop further LNG locations together with you: Contact us and let us know your favourite locations.

Let's make heavy goods transport sustainable together.

As you can see, there are good reasons to use LNG in heavy goods transport. While the performance is comparable to diesel, the environmental impact is significantly lower. In addition, you benefit from the toll exemption until at least the end of 2023.

FAQ: Your questions, our answers.

How will LNG be transported?

As liquid goods, LNG is transported in special transport containers by road, rail and water. Terminals that are connected to the gas network via pipelines or have facilities for loading and unloading tankers serve as transshipment points.

What is the difference between LNG and CNG?

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is natural gas (methane) compressed by pressure, which as a fossil fuel is significantly lower in emissions than diesel, for example. The same applies to LNG. The difference is that it is cryogenic liquefied natural gas. This reduces the volume by a factor of 600, which makes it particularly easy to transport and store.

Is LNG future-proof as a drive for road freight transport?

Yes. If you choose commercial vehicles with LNG propulsion today, you will not only be more climate and environmentally friendly tomorrow, but also cheaper and thus future-proof on the road thanks to tax subsidies, toll exemptions and other cost advantages.
