What is hydrogen?

Hydrogen is the smallest and most abundant chemical element in the universe. It is abbreviated as H2. The colourless, odourless and non-toxic gas is lighter than air and available in almost unlimited quantities. Hydrogen occurs in nature primarily in chemically bound form, for example in combination with oxygen as water (H₂O).

How is hydrogen produced?

There are various ways to produce hydrogen. The most widespread is currently steam reforming from natural gas, in which CO₂is released as a waste product. The hydrogen obtained in this way is called "grey hydrogen". So-called "green hydrogen" is considered the key to the energy and mobility revolution.
