Drive for the mobility turnaround:
Hydrogen from Westfalen.
Green hydrogen for commercial vehicles: RWE and the Westfalen Group build hydrogen filling station in Lingen - starting signal for national filling station network.

To achieve more climate protection, the transport sector must also reduce emissions. This is where hydrogen comes into play as an alternative fuel, or rather into the tank: filling up with hydrogen only takes a few minutes. The ranges of a tank filling and vehicle performance are comparable to those of petrol or diesel vehicles. And: the drive is clean - only water vapour is produced when driving with a fuel cell.
Benefits that pay off especially in
In the future, it is primarily green hydrogen that will be available at the pumps - this is produced in a climate-friendly way using renewable energies by means of electrolysis.
How can you use hydrogen as an alternative fuel to power your vehicle fleet? How does Westfalen support you in this? This is shown in our video "Experts for sustainable mobility".
The number and variety of available hydrogen vehicles are slowly picking up speed: Cars and buses, but also the first trucks, refuse collectors and industrial trucks from various manufacturers are already on the roads. They all run on fuel cells - and particularly quietly. In the fuel cell, the fuel hydrogen reacts with oxygen. This produces electricity and water. The electricity drives an electric motor, which in turn drives the vehicle. The water is emitted through the exhaust. It is so clean that you could theoretically drink it.
In addition, the industry is currently working on vehicles that do their kilometres with an internal combustion engine - powered by hydrogen. With these engines, too, the CO2 limit set by the EU for "zero emissions" can be achieved.
The network of hydrogen filling stations is developing along with the hydrogen vehicles. Hydrogen vehicles that refuel at 700 bar can already find fuel supplies at over 160 stations in Europe. Commercial vehicles that refuel at 350 bar can be supplied with hydrogen at around 50 public filling stations. In Germany, 13 filling stations with 350-bar refuelling are currently in operation, and 19 more are being built. More are needed for the hydrogen ramp-up. That is why we are working with partners on solutions to expand the refuelling infrastructure. In doing so, our customers benefit from our decades of experience in the fields of gases and filling stations as a expert in sustainable mobility.

Are you thinking about purchasing hydrogen vehicles for your municipality or company, but do not yet know where and how you can reliably refuel them? We would be happy to examine possible solutions with you and develop a future-proof mobility concept!
Fuel cell vehicles have been refuelling at our hydrogen filling station in Münster-Amelsbüren since 2016. The station, which can supply vehicles with 700 bar and 350 bar, was one of the first H2 filling stations in NRW. In addition, we are working on setting up further hydrogen filling stations, especially for North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony.
More about our hydrogen filling station network
You would like to purchase your first hydrogen vehicles? You don't have a filling station nearby and the construction of your own stationary filling station is not (yet) worthwhile? Then our mobile hydrogen filling station, which we have developed in cooperation with NanoSun, could be your solution. The container-based system can be set up almost anywhere and refuels at 350 bar - ideal for hydrogen pioneers and their first buses, material handling vehicles, trucks or even construction or agricultural machinery.
You already operate a hydrogen filling station and need hydrogen as fuel? We can supply you reliably! For the fuel cell to function optimally, the purity grade of the refuelled hydrogen must be suitable. Our product for fuel cells complies with the DIN EN 17124 standard with a purity level of 99.97 %. It is regularly analysed for secondary components and thus ensures the highest level of safety.
We are convinced that the mobility transition can only succeed if we work together. That is why we are a member of CEP e.V. (Clean Energy Partnership). Here, companies are working together to promote the further ramp-up of hydrogen mobility and hydrogen infrastructure in Germany. In various working groups, the association's experts deal with issues such as norms and technical standards.
You are not yet sure whether hydrogen is the right solution for your fleet? We also develop mobility concepts for alternatives such as natural gas in the form of CNG or LNG or electromobility and are happy to calculate different variants with you. Contact us - together we will find the best way for you to achieve greater sustainability! Find out more about alternative fuels at Westfalen.
The hydrogen-powered vehicles already available are equipped with fuel cells. The propulsion energy is generated when gaseous hydrogen combines with oxygen from the ambient air in the fuel cell. This process produces pure water in addition to electricity. In addition, the industry is working on vehicles with hydrogen combustion engines.
Hydrogen cars offer you the same refuelling convenience as conventional vehicles with petrol or diesel combustion engines. Refuelling is quick and safe at H2 dispensers and takes only a few minutes - depending on the pressure level and tank size. Car tanks, for example, are filled in three to four minutes.
Hydrogen offers a powerful and climate-friendly drive alternative for vehicles. Whereas conventional combustion engines emit harmful exhaust gases, only water vapour comes out of the exhaust of fuel cell vehicles. The vehicles can be refuelled within a few minutes and achieve long ranges with a single tank. In addition, hydrogen can be produced in a climate-friendly way with the help of electrolysis: Hydrogen produced with electricity from a renewable energy source is considered green hydrogen. Players around the world are working hard to build up production capacities for green hydrogen. We at Westfalen are also currently developing sources for it.
