With hydrogen propulsion and fuel cells, passenger cars and commercial vehicles drive safely and almost cleanly: only water vapour is produced as exhaust gas during the journey. As a supplier of calibration gases, we are intensively involved in the analysis of hydrogen as a fuel. In a federally funded research project, we are currently working together with renowned partners such as the two metrological institutes BAM (Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing) and PTB (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt). In fuel cells, hydrogen as fuel and oxygen as oxidant react in a chemical process. In the process, the energy stored in the hydrogen is released as electricity. If the hydrogen used is contaminated, this can severely impair fuel cell safety, because impurities in the hydrogen

lead to dilution of the hydrogen. This reduces the efficiency of the fuel cell and its performance.
e.g. block the catalytic converter and thus further reduce the performance of the fuel cell.
for e.g. carbon dioxide can lead to corrosion and erosion and thus damage the tank/pipe system.
for e.g. sulphur can permanently damage the electrodes and membranes of the fuel cell.
